Propaganda - Keep Calm and Carry On Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Propaganda - Keep Calm and Carry On 1939 UK DC - 20" x 30" Near Mint £9,950
Notes: This is a very rare and important piece of British history, printed in 1939 when the threat of invasion by the all conquering Nazis was a very real possibility. This design was printed in secret and intended for distribution only if the Germans landed on British soil. Thankfully this never happened and, like all paper in the 1940's, stocks were taken from storage, pulped and recycled in the austerity years after the war. It was almost completely forgotten until one was rediscovered in 2000 by the owner of a bookshop, whereupon the design became the centre of a worldwide marketing phenomenon, appearing on everything from mugs to T-shirts. There were believed to be only two survivors until a stash of fifteen appeared on the BBC Antiques Roadshow in 2012 and six more appeared from another significant estate find of a hoard of wartime posters in 2014. They remain incredibly rare with under forty known examples in the world. Undoubtedly the most poignant of any wartime poster in British history, it has recently also become one of the most iconic motivational themes of all time and is consequently increasingly sought after. Rolled in superb condition.

Queen (The) Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Queen (The) 1968 16” x 27” Near Mint £975
Notes: Screen printed in very small numbers by the London College of Printing (LCP) for a private film club showing in 1970, this is an important poster for several reasons. The Queen is a 1968 documentary about drag queens in New York at a time when homosexuality was still illegal in the USA. Released the year before the Stonewall riots of 1969, which led to the establishment of the Gay Liberation Front and ultimately changed this law in 1980, their bravery in coming out like this is quite extraordinary. The film was a landmark for the LGBT community, then and now. This poster is a rare work from the LCP, a tremendously influential British artistic foundation. It's also a very early example of a film poster from the increasingly collectible 'mondo' film poster scene. Rolled in excellent condition with just a pinhole in each corner, this is the only one I've ever seen and, with a likely original production run of under fifty distributed to LCP students in 1970, it may well now be a one of a handful of survivors.

Rebel Without a Cause Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Rebel Without a Cause 1955 Italian 4-foglio 55"X78" Fine/Near Mint on linen £1,995
Notes: Stunning large format poster by Luigi Martinati from the golden age of Italian movie art in the twenty years after WW2. Not only beautiful but very, very rare, these posters were printed in two sections and pasted into position when used so had a near 100% destruction rate by the end of the film run - there's probably no more than a dozen left in the world today. This is a particularly good linen backed example with strong unfaded colour, no damage and minimal retouching needed to the fold lines. One small area of paper replacement on the right hand border, otherwise superb. N.B. although this design was created for the 1956 first release in Italy, this particular poster was printed for the 1960 re-release using the original artwork. The only difference is the tiny addition of a date next to the printer name in the bottom right hand corner. With first printings fetching well over £4,000, this is an excellent way to obtain this period poster at a substantial discount.

Sex Maniac (Maniac) Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Sex Maniac (Maniac) 1934 US 40" x 60" Fine on board £3,500
Notes: Unique one-off display piece from the 1940's for Dwain Esper's horror movie, first released in 1934 as Maniac. This poster is a fascinating piece of Americana from the 'grindhouse' cinema circuit that catered to the more risque side of the film business, showing the kind of sexploitation movies that you wouldn't tell your mother you were going to see. In fact, you wouldn't tell anybody you were going which meant that unscrupulous cinema owners could get away with murder. In this case, they deliberately chose images and a tagline to suggest a raunchy plot – the reality was there was no sex and nothing in the least bit titillating but who were you going to complain to? This is far more than just a movie poster, it's a glimpse of a different time and an alternative world. The poster itself is composed of a 40” x 60” poster salvaged from another film, complete with a grossly misleading tagline, onto which is stapled the new film title (Sex Maniac), also misleading, and a selection of pasted on photos with glamorous women to complete the con trick. This poster is featured in Tony Nourmand's book Sexploitation Movie Art and was part of his collection. It's in generally good shape with light overall patina of age, pasted onto board with a tear in the top edge at the top which doesn't affect the overall presentation. It's currently conservation framed with non-refective UV glass.

Slaves in Bondage 1937 US 1 sht 27"x41" Near Mint on linen £875
Notes: An early exploitation movie, this is about the "white slavery" problem - women being forced into prostitution and other vices by evil mobs. The film begins with a sweet young lady being kidnapped but ultimately escaping from these thugs. Much of the rest of the film is concerned with tracking down the bad guys and prosecuting them. This poster is from the film's first release, linenbacked with minimal retouching. The stone litho print process gives the colour a strength and depth that later offset litho printing could never match.

Spitfire (The First of the Few) 1942 US 1 sht 27"x41" Fine on linen £3,250
Notes: In part, the story of how the most famous plane in the world was designed and partly a morale boosting film for the British public during the dark days of the war, this is one of the most important films of the conflict. Made during WWII, this 1942 British made movie was called The First of the Few in the UK and Spitfire in the USA. By the late 1920's aircraft designer R.J. Mitchell feels he has achieved all he wants with his revolutionary mono-planes winning trophy after trophy. But a holiday in Germany shortly after Hitler assumes power convinces him that it is vital to design a completely new type of fighter plane and that sooner or later Britain's very survival may depend on what he comes to call the Spitfire. Leslie Howard and David Niven are superb in this defining piece of history. This poster is from the film's first release, linen backed in superb condition with airbrushing to borders.
