RAF – 100 years of flying history

With the RAF celebrating their 100th birthday this year, I thought that I’d focus on their history and the history of flying in general. As well as the big films like Wings, The Dam Busters, The Battle of Britain and First of the Few (AKA Spitfire in the USA), I have some rare World War One and World War Two propaganda posters featuring the RAF.

Tally ho chaps!

Dam Busters Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Dam Busters 1955 UK quad - 40"x30" Very Good/Fine on linen £9,995
Notes: One of the rarest and most sought after posters from any of the leading war films, the first release UK quad for the Dam Busters has reached almost mythical status. I can only find two auction records from the last 20 years. This is a country-of-origin UK quad for this very British tale of heroism and ingenuity in the allied efforts to destroy the German dams in WW2. This is linen backed in excellent condition with airbrushing to borders and minor retouching.

Spitfire (The First of the Few) Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Spitfire (The First of the Few) 1942 US 1 sht - 27"x41" Fine on linen £6,995
Notes: Made during WWII, this 1942 British made movie was called The First of the Few in the UK and Spitfire in the USA. By the late 1920's aircraft designer R.J. Mitchell feels he has achieved all he wants with his revolutionary mono-planes winning trophy after trophy. But a holiday in Germany shortly after Hitler assumes power convinces him that it is vital to design a completely new type of fighter plane and that sooner or later Britain's very survival may depend on what he comes to call the Spitfire. Leslie Howard and David Niven are superb in this defining piece of history. This poster is from the film's first release, linen backed in superb condition with airbrushing to borders.

Wings Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Wings 1927 US program Very Good £145
Notes: Daring danger and destruction. Scouring the skies for enemy planes. Soaring to the clouds in a flimsy machine. And yet, like a charm, her love kept this "Shooting Star." Carried him through the terrific dangers. Brought him back to earth. Spirited, striving, spectacular. A story of the air "Aces" in France .A technical milestone in its day, the first Acadamy Award winner for Best film and launched Gary Cooper's career. This stunning 9" x 12" full colour program is 20 pages long and complete, from the film's first release in 1927. This program is folded.

Wings Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Wings 1927 French 44" x 53" Fine on linen £12,750
Notes: Released in 1927, Wings is one of the most important films in movie history and not just because it won the first ever Best Picture Oscar. Wings also set new standards for technical excellence with its extraordinary aerial dogfight sequences and changed the way films were made forever. This particular poster is unbelievably rare and the only larger format original 1927 poster that I have ever seen or heard of for this landmark film. While lobby cards and window cards do appear every few years and several US 1 sheets have surfaced (Heritage have sold two for £50,000+), I have been unable to find evidence of any larger format posters ever coming to the market. This one is from France (the scene of the action in the film) and, although the lower credits have been lost and the outer white borders replaced, the main artwork of the RAF fighter plane is in excellent condition with little wear, minimal retouching and no fading. It was printed using a stone litho rather than offset litho press which gives more vivid colours (offset litho presses took over in the 1930's because they were faster and more accurate). Quite possibly a unique opportunity.

Angels One Five 1952 UK 1 sht - 27"X40" Fine on linen £595
Notes: One of the best portrayals of the fighter pilots and their ground crews that were so critical in winning the Battle of Britain in 1940, Angels One Five focuses on the human side of the conflict (the title is the instruction for pilots to proceed to 15,000 feet). Bombs over London Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Bombs over London 1937 US 3 sht - 41" X 81" Good £145
Notes: Stunning image of London skyline and bombers. A cabal of armament manufacturers conspire to wreck a peace conference and start a war for profit and personal reasons. Very good fast moving thriller that is slightly sci-fi with radio controlled planes and large machines but they are merely window dressing as hero and heroine try to get to the bottom of the plot. From the first release, folded as issued, this poster has good paper and bright unfaded colours, although it does also have some white archival tape reinforcement on the front of the poster which could be removed during linen backing to look great.

Propaganda - aerial combat over aircraft carrier 1943 UK DC - 20" x 30" poor £150
Notes: This is a rare WW2 UK government issued propaganda poster awaiting linen backing and restoration. With artwork by Frank Wootton, it shows aerial combat above a British aircraft carrier. Although the Imperial War Museum lists this as Sea Hurricanes fighting a Dornier, the British planes appear to me to be Fairey Fulmars. Any more expert aviation advice gratefully accepted on this point. Whatever the case, dating from around 1943, this is one of the rarer variants of British civil propaganda that can be restored to look wonderful again. Likely restoration costs would be around £300.

Propaganda - ATS Blonde Bombshell Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Propaganda - ATS Blonde Bombshell 1941 UK DC - 20" x 30" Fine £2,250
Notes: One of the rarest and most sought after of any British propaganda posters. This Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) poster caused so much controversy in August 1941 that it was swiftly withdrawn by the British Government. The glamorous blonde with bright red lipstick depicted on a Second World War poster by the artist Abram Games seems harmless enough today but at the time it provoked fierce debate over whether it was the right way to recruit women into the Army's dowdy ATS. The 'Blonde Bombshell', with its implications of potential sexual freedom within a more mobile female wartime population, was withdrawn from circulation on parliamentary demand as being unsuitable and all copies were pulped for the war effort. This is a rare survivor in excellent condition with no fading of the colours and only light handling wear.

Propaganda - Keep Calm and Carry On Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Propaganda - Keep Calm and Carry On 1939 UK DC - 20" x 30" Near Mint £7,995
Notes: This is a very rare and important piece of British history, printed in 1939 when the threat of invasion by the all conquering Nazis was a very real possibility. This design was printed in secret and intended for distribution only if the Germans landed on British soil. Thankfully this never happened and, like all paper in the 1940's, stocks were taken from storage, pulped and recycled in the austerity years after the war. It was almost completely forgotten until one was rediscovered in 2000 by the owner of a bookshop, whereupon the design became the centre of a worldwide marketing phenomenon, appearing on everything from mugs to T-shirts. There were believed to be only two survivors until a stash of fifteen appeared on the BBC Antiques Roadshow in 2012 and six more appeared from another significant estate find of a hoard of wartime posters in 2014. They remain incredibly rare with under forty known examples in the world. Undoubtedly the most poignant of any wartime poster in British history, it has recently also become one of the most iconic motivational themes of all time and is consequently increasingly sought after. Rolled in superb condition.
