Sex Maniac (Maniac) Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Sex Maniac (Maniac) 1934 US 40" x 60" Fine on board £3,500
Notes: Unique one-off display piece from the 1940's for Dwain Esper's horror movie, first released in 1934 as Maniac. This poster is a fascinating piece of Americana from the 'grindhouse' cinema circuit that catered to the more risque side of the film business, showing the kind of sexploitation movies that you wouldn't tell your mother you were going to see. In fact, you wouldn't tell anybody you were going which meant that unscrupulous cinema owners could get away with murder. In this case, they deliberately chose images and a tagline to suggest a raunchy plot – the reality was there was no sex and nothing in the least bit titillating but who were you going to complain to? This is far more than just a movie poster, it's a glimpse of a different time and an alternative world. The poster itself is composed of a 40” x 60” poster salvaged from another film, complete with a grossly misleading tagline, onto which is stapled the new film title (Sex Maniac), also misleading, and a selection of pasted on photos with glamorous women to complete the con trick. This poster is featured in Tony Nourmand's book Sexploitation Movie Art and was part of his collection. It's in generally good shape with light overall patina of age, pasted onto board with a tear in the top edge at the top which doesn't affect the overall presentation. It's currently conservation framed with non-refective UV glass.

Spitfire (The First of the Few) Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Spitfire (The First of the Few) 1942 US 1 sht - 27"x41" Fine on linen £3,995
Notes: In part, the story of how the most famous plane in the world was designed and partly a morale boosting film for the British public during the dark days of the war, this is one of the most important films of the conflict. Made during WWII, this 1942 British made movie was called The First of the Few in the UK and Spitfire in the USA. By the late 1920's aircraft designer R.J. Mitchell feels he has achieved all he wants with his revolutionary mono-planes winning trophy after trophy. But a holiday in Germany shortly after Hitler assumes power convinces him that it is vital to design a completely new type of fighter plane and that sooner or later Britain's very survival may depend on what he comes to call the Spitfire. Leslie Howard and David Niven are superb in this defining piece of history. This poster is from the film's first release, linen backed in superb condition with airbrushing to borders.

2001: A Space Odyssey (Cinerama) Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
2001: A Space Odyssey (Cinerama) 1968 US 40" x 60" Very Good/Fine on linen £1,995
Notes: The Cinerama version of the 40 x 60 is very rare as it was produced solely for Cinerama cinemas of which there were only about 100 in the USA (Cinerama was a ground breaking big screen format that was a forerunner of the current imax big screens). One of the rarest of all formats, I can only find a record of one other of these posters having come to the market in the last 20 years. Unlike normal 40 x 60 US posters, it was printed on normal paper rather than card stock. It has now been linen backed with light overall wear and retouching to the yellow titles only.

Acid Eaters 1968 US 1 sht - 27"X41" Near Mint on linen £1,450
Notes: Rare country of origin US 1 sheet poster for this classic hippy psychedelic drug exploitation movie from 1968. Films and posters rarely capture the zeitgeist like this with wild artwork and naked women on the poster. Linen backed in superb condition. N.B. This poster was printed slightly oversize at 28" x 41.75". This is normal for this title, not a mistake.

Adventures of Captain Marvel Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Adventures of Captain Marvel 1941 US 1 sht - 27"X41" Fine on linen £995
Notes: The first of the movie superheroes. Classic Saturday morning cinema serial based on the character in WHIZ COMICS Magazine about the boy who becomes a superhero when he says "Shazam" and he fights a mysterious masked villain called The Scorpion. Republic Pictures had tried to make a deal with DC Comics to make serials of Superman and Batman in 1940, but were turned down and instead made a deal with Whiz Comics in 1941. This was actually the very first of the many movies based on costumed super heroes, predating Superman and Batman by two years. Because it was released at the start of America's involvement in World War II, and there were paper drives over the next few years, original 1941 movie paper on this title is EXTREMELY rare. Linen backed in excellent condition with retouching to borders.

Assassin of Youth Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Assassin of Youth 1937 US 1 sht - 27"X41" Fine/Near Mint £4,995
Notes: This 1937 exploitation film from director Elmer Clifton details the alleged ill effects of cannabis or "marihuana" on America's youth. Similar to the better known Reefer Madness, the picture represents the exaggerated anti-drug propaganda of the time.  This is a rare one sheet poster from the first release. Like many low budget, low circulation exploitation films, the poster was a hand drawn screen print produced in small numbers rather than printed on a regular machine press. This not only makes it much rarer than other movie posters, the process also gives the design stronger bolder colours. This example is in excellent original condition with no fading and minimal yellowing of the paper. There is a little edge wear at the corners and archival tape repairs to fold separations but these do not detract from the overall presentation and it looks stunning.

Back to the Future (lightbox prototype advance) Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Back to the Future (lightbox prototype advance) 1985 US Mall poster 40"x50" Fine/Near Mint £2,450
Notes: Super rare early lightbox poster used in tiny numbers for the 1985 Chicago launch of Back to the Future - we are only aware of two other copies ever coming to the market (Cinemasterpieces have had two). This one is an advance for the film and the only variant to feature the actual release date (July 3rd) rather than 'Coming Soon to a theater near you'. Double sided posters had been in development since the 1950's but only a handful had been printed successfully (notably Zulu and Breakfast at Tiffany's) because of the difficulty of achieving perfect registration on the front and back of the paper. Technology advances made this economic in the late 80's and we saw widespread adoption of double sided posters from that point. This is an early double sided Mall poster rolled in excellent condition. It has three very small areas of tape damage at top and bottom - these are about an inch wide and only extend about a quarter of an inch into the poster. They have been professionally retouched and the poster presents as near mint/mint.
