|Notes: One of the rarest of all the posters produced for 2001: A Space Odyssey, this is from the first printing of the iconic starchild image from 1970 when they released the new 70mm print to cinemas while the 35mm print was still touring, two posters were created for the New York premiere of this release - the psychedelic eye design and the starchild. The eye design was printed in very small numbers. The starchild design was primarily printed up as a 1 sheet but only used for 'wilding' in New York - i.e. it was pasted up around town rather than at the cinemas, which meant that all those that were used were effectively destroyed, leaving a tiny number of survivors. The 30 x 40 cardstock poster that we have here today was also printed up in small numbers at this time and bears the original NSS number of 68/103 because this was still technically a continuation of the 1968 first release despit it being 1970. N.B. This starchild design then became the iconic main image used in most of the later re-releases in 1972, 1974 and thereafter. This particular poster has been overstamped with the NSS number of 72-38, showing that it was reused in 1972. This was not unusual, the more robust nature of the cardstock 30 x 40 poster meant that could be used over and over again.
