Battle Beyond the Sun (Nebo Zovyot) Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Battle Beyond the Sun (Nebo Zovyot) 1959 Russian - 25" x 40" Very Good/Fine on linen £695
Notes: With artwork by Tsarev, this is a rare country of origin poster from the first release in Russia of the Russian sci-fi classic, Nebo Zovyot. Note that Roger Corman had Francis Ford Coppola re-cut this movie and add new footage (directed by Coppola, who was billed as "Thomas Colchart") and renamed it "Battle Beyond the Sun". This was Coppola's directorial debut. For the American release, the Russian characters were given American names (to disguise the fact that it was a Russian movie at the height of the cold war), and the American posters credit "Edd Perry" and "Arla Powell" rather than Ivan Pereverzev and Aleksandr Shvorin. Linen backed with a repair to an edge chip on the left hand side.

Downhill Racer Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Downhill Racer 1969 US 1 sht - 27"X41" Fine on linen £395
Notes: The US style A one sheet poster for Downhill Racer is a superb and clever piece of graphic design, juxtaposing a tiny skier against the vastness of the ski slopes symbolised by the protagonists' heads. Often viewed simply as a superior sports movie and the best skiing film ever, many view Robert Redford's brooding performance as the finest of his career. It was certainly the experience that led him to establish the Sundance Film Festival and promote more intelligent, more sensitive films to the general public. This is from the 1969 first release, linen backed in excellent condition with just minor retouching to fold lines.

Moonraker Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Moonraker 1979 Italian locandina 13"X27" Fine/Near Mint £60
Notes: Moonraker was the 11th film in the series and the fourth starring Roger Moore, "Moonraker" works very well for a number of reasons. As Ian Fleming's original novel (written in 1955) had become too dated to translate to the screen, the producers decided to capitalise on the sci-fi craze started by Star Wars, and so created a spectacular space-age adventure where James Bond himself journeys into outer space. Oscar nominated for effects and with a great cast, it has more comedy moments than any other of the Bond films but carried them off well. From the first release in Italy, folded with light wear only.

Propaganda - Keep Calm and Carry On Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Propaganda - Keep Calm and Carry On 1939 UK DC - 20" x 30" Near Mint £7,995
Notes: This is a very rare and important piece of British history, printed in 1939 when the threat of invasion by the all conquering Nazis was a very real possibility. This design was printed in secret and intended for distribution only if the Germans landed on British soil. Thankfully this never happened and, like all paper in the 1940's, stocks were taken from storage, pulped and recycled in the austerity years after the war. It was almost completely forgotten until one was rediscovered in 2000 by the owner of a bookshop, whereupon the design became the centre of a worldwide marketing phenomenon, appearing on everything from mugs to T-shirts. There were believed to be only two survivors until a stash of fifteen appeared on the BBC Antiques Roadshow in 2012 and six more appeared from another significant estate find of a hoard of wartime posters in 2014. They remain incredibly rare with under forty known examples in the world. Undoubtedly the most poignant of any wartime poster in British history, it has recently also become one of the most iconic motivational themes of all time and is consequently increasingly sought after. Rolled in superb condition.

Star Wars - style A 77/21 video release Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
Star Wars - style A 77/21 video release 1977 US 1 sht - 27"x41" good on linen £165
Notes: Iconic artwork by Jung makes this the most famous poster for the ultimate sci-fi movie. Such was the success of the film, there were four different poster print runs for the A sheet in 1977 to meet demand from cinemas. This poster is often mistaken for a first release because it uses the same artwork and reference number but it's for the first video release in 1980. It was originally rolled with no fold lines and has now been linen backed to address the heavy all round edge wear in the outer white border. It certainly does have a lot of patina from use but, despite this, it still presents well and the central artwork is in pretty good shape. Offered at less than half the price of a clean example.

1948 London Games - XIV Olympiad Original Vintage Movie Poster
Title Year Nominal size Condition Price
1948 London Games - XIV Olympiad 1948 UK 1 sht - 27"X40" Good on linen £495
Notes: 1948 poster advertising the British made film of the London Olympic games featuring the famous Rank 'Gong Man' striking the Olympic flag - a truly iconic image. The XIV Olympiad was the first Olympics for 12 years due to the second world war - the previous games having been held in Berlin in 1936 and was dubbed the austerity Olympics because of the extensive rationing. Prior to the widespread use of TV, this would have been the only way that the majority of the country saw the Olympic Games. N.B. This is very rare indeed compared to the much smaller official 1948 Olympic posters (the largest of which was just 20" x 30" compared to the 27" x 40" for this poster) of which 100,000 were printed as souvenirs and now sell for up to £5,000. Less than 3,000 of this poster were printed, none were sold to the public and almost all would have been routinely recycled for pulp immediately so there are probably less than 10 surviving examples in the world today. A fascinating piece of social as well as Olympic history. There are no records of any coming to a public auction in the last 20 years. I have seen two in 25 years of collecting. First release poster from 1948, linen backed with retouching to borders.

Adventures of Captain Marvel 1941 US 1 sht - 27"X41" Fine on linen £995
Notes: The first of the movie superheroes. Classic Saturday morning cinema serial based on the character in WHIZ COMICS Magazine about the boy who becomes a superhero when he says "Shazam" and he fights a mysterious masked villain called The Scorpion. Republic Pictures had tried to make a deal with DC Comics to make serials of Superman and Batman in 1940, but were turned down and instead made a deal with Whiz Comics in 1941. This was actually the very first of the many movies based on costumed super heroes, predating Superman and Batman by two years. Because it was released at the start of America's involvement in World War II, and there were paper drives over the next few years, original 1941 movie paper on this title is EXTREMELY rare.
